Urgent Massachusetts: Smart Meter Opt-Out, Take Action Now

Massachusetts Senate Bill 2152 allows people to opt-out of Smart Meter usage in their homes. Protect your privacy and your right to minimize EMF exposure and support this bill.

S.2152 is before the Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy and must be favorably reported out by Sunday April 7.

The bill would enable Massachusetts consumers to opt-out of Smart Meter usage without any charge—meaning they can choose an analog electric meter. These Smart Meters use RF radiation to send utility companies information about water, gas, and electricity consumption. According to Children’s Health Defense,

• Smart Meter EMF can cause serious health problems, especially for children. In 2018 a study under the National Institutes of Health found “clear evidence” that electromagnetic radiation was associated with both cancer and DNA damage.

• Smart Meters impinge on privacy and personal liberty issues regarding with whom utility companies share data collected. CHD’s attorney W. Scott McCollough shares that these devices, “are yet another invasion of individual liberty, autonomy and privacy.”

Let your Senator and the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy know that you support S.2152.

Under S.2152, utility companies have to provide a choice of meter type, to include an electromechanical analog meter. They would also not be able to charge folks for this choice. Written consent would be required for the installation of any wireless meters. Within 90 days of passage of this bill, companies need to give written notice to all customers as to whether they currently have a “smart meter.”
