Confessions of a Health Freedom Advocate

Julie Booras, NHFA Public Outreach and Development

NHFA 2025 Fall Fundraiser

I have a confession to make.

I didn’t set out to be a health freedom advocate. I was just a mom trying to do the best for my kids. But when my son was injured by childhood vaccines, my world changed. I began moving toward more natural healing modalities and wondered if those “well visits” at the doctor’s office were actually making my children sick?

In 2018, after reading my first book about vaccines and the vaccine industry, the blinders came off. And in 2019, Massachusetts lawmakers filed bills to strip away the religious exemption to school vaccines and allow minors to consent to vaccines without parental knowledge or consent.

The threat was real. California, New York, Maine, and Connecticut had already removed religious and personal belief exemptions, and families were being denied medical exemptions, too. Questions kept nagging at me: Why are we always fighting against bad bills? Where are the good bills that protect us? Who is writing those?

Then, in 2020, I found the answer: National Health Freedom Action (NHFA). NHFA was founded in 2001 by activists passionate about ensuring that herbalists, homeopaths, naturopaths, energy healers, and many others could practice legally without fear. And they succeeded in creating a unique legislative solution: Safe Harbor Laws. As a result, today already eleven states have passed this protective legislation – with more in the works!

Even more amazing, back in 2002, NHFA’s attorneys—based in Minnesota—drafted and filed an amendment to the Governor’s Public Health Emergency powers. Minnesota became the only state in the nation to add explicit protections to its Governor’s Public Health Emergency powers so people would always retain the Right to Refuse vaccines, testing, and extreme quarantine—nearly 20 yea

With NHFA’s coaching, I filed bills in Massachusetts to protect people’s rights to make their own health decisions. I co-founded Health Rights MA. I testified at hearings, rallied people to show up, educated legislators, and helped grow a movement. I keep showing up because this is the hill I will die on. We must protect health freedom for our children and grandchildren.

And here’s the truth: without NHFA, I could not have done any of it. They have created a “monster”—an unstoppable advocate in me—and they’ve done the same for so many others across the country.

If it hadn’t been for NHFA and especially Diane Miller, we would have never passed our Safe Harbor bill in Colorado. We also give great credit to our wonderful lobbyist Nate Gorman. It was a blessing to work with both of them.” – Jackie Pinkham, President, Colorado Sunshine Health Freedom Foundation

NHFA’s work is quiet, steady, and mostly behind the scenes. They are planting seeds and watering the garden—nurturing advocates like me until we can carry the fight in our own states. But to keep this movement alive, NHFA needs your help.

“For a decade, NHFA has worked closely with our organization, California Health Coalition Advocacy: assisting us in forming our non-profit 501(c)(4) organization, training us in lobbying, educating us about the legislative process, and instilling in us the importance of building relationships at the capitol. They helped us draft multiple health freedom bills which we have shopped to legislators in Sacramento and last year we got our first bill passed into law. We could not have done it without the help of NHFA”. – Valerie Noble, President, California Health Coalition Advocacy

“With Steven and Nate’s guidance, we have been able to craft and introduce a bill which will prohibit mask requirements in educational settings across Vermont. The team support provided by NHFA has helped us understand the process, build legislative inroads, and given our bill the best chance to make progress and get a fair hearing.” – Amy Hornblas, Health Choice Vermont

Here’s the challenge: We must raise $32,000 by September 30th at midnight. Thanks to generous donors Jerri and Steve Johnson, Dr. Clark Store, and an anonymous donor, the first $16,000 will be matched dollar for dollar. That means your gift of $50 becomes $100. Your gift of $250 becomes $500. Your monthly gift of $25 becomes $600!

This is the fuel that allows NHFA to:

  •  Draft proactive health freedom laws.  Train citizen advocates.

  •  Provide legislative expertise.

  •  Keep the Right to Refuse project alive and growing.

  •  Protect access to complementary and alternative practitioners through Safe Harbor laws, so herbalists, homeopaths, naturopaths, and other healers can practice legally without fear.

  •  Defend innovative doctors through the Expanded Practices Act, so physicians can provide integrative, non-standard treatments without risk of losing their license.

We can’t stop now. Too much is at stake. Please, make your most generous gift today—before midnight on September 30th—and help us reach our $32,000 goal. Together, we can move from defense to offense and secure the health freedom future we want for our children and grandchildren.

With determination and gratitude,

Julie Booras, National Health Freedom Action

P.S. This is my confession: I’m just a mom who got angry, got involved, and found NHFA. They gave me, and so many others, the tools to fight back. Now, I’m asking you to stand with us. Every dollar you give by Sept. 30 will be doubled—don’t miss this chance to have your impact multiplied!
